As a designer I find it important to have a place to keep all my inspiration for a current or future project.
I currently and working with a custom cork board that was made for me as a gift from my father. It is huge! (47"x 36") My cork board holds all my things! Inspiration pieces, receipts from current projects, jewelry, etc. From time to time I also but a big calendar up there if I am extra busy and need a quick glance calendar to see.
Having a landing space for everything is so helpful when dealing with a busy tech week or multiple projects. I highly suggest having a place to keep all the paperwork, bits, inspiration, etc. You could get this look by using multiple small cork boards that can be mounted right next to each other on the wall on in my case on a light board to move a single unit. If you don't quite like that look, a grouping of smaller boards can also help organize. You could use a different board for each thing (like folders!)

All Costume Designers need to take Accounting

For those of you still at university I highly suggest taking a few business classes while you get your degree. I took a few in my undergrad days because I was getting a minor in Arts and Cultural Management so my course study was heavy in business classes.

As a freelance designer I have had to us my knowledge from these classes as well as my awesome Microsoft Exel skills quite a bit. One bit reason is you don't always have an assistant to keep your budget up to date, or you ARE that assistant keeping the budget up to date. Knowing what is coming in and what is going out is a big part of the job and already knowing a bit about it and the tools needed is a big step ahead.

Better yet, take an entrepreneurial class if your university offers one. This way you will know more about how to run your freelance business. Knowing if you need to be an LLC, how your taxes work, how to pay yourself, is very important when dealing with real money from real producers.

An app to use

Recently I was introduced to a new app by a professor before graduating. We were refining our character boards for vintage suppliers and rental houses and using color swatches to help show our desired color range. Our professor suggested using Pantone to distinguish colors. Originally she sent us to the website, but also suggested the Pantone Studio app.

This is thing is amazing! My favorite feature is the ability to take a photo of anything and Pantone will color match it. (See right photo) not only that, but you can also move the dots on the photo you’ve taken to choose the desired item to color match! I think this will make color matching so much easier for rentals and vintage shopping in the future!

It’s also just a fun app to play with.
Happy color matching!

(not a paid post. I genuinely have the app and love it and think it would be helpful to all designers)
